♟️ Global Chess League 2026 Begins Today: Magnus Carlsen Returns to Bengaluru

Bengaluru, September 5, 2026 — The wait is finally over. The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Season 4 officially begins today in Bengaluru, bringing some of the biggest names in world chess together for nine days of high-level team competition.

The fourth season runs from September 5 to 13 at The Lalit Ashok, Bengaluru, with six franchise teams battling through the league stage before the top two teams meet in the final.

Magnus Carlsen Is Back

The biggest headline of the tournament is undoubtedly Magnus Carlsen's return.

After missing the previous season, the world's top player is back as the Icon player for defending champions Alpine APL Pipers. He will be joined by a powerful lineup including Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi, Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh and Volodar Murzin.

For Carlsen, the tournament also provides another opportunity to make his mark in team chess. Despite his extraordinary individual record, team competitions have historically been less successful for the Norwegian superstar.

Six Teams, One Championship

Six franchises will compete in Season 4:

• Alpine APL Pipers

• Triveni Continental Kings

• FYERS American Gambits

• Ganges Grandmasters

• PBG Alaskan Knights

• CheQ Mumba Masters

The league uses a unique mixed-team format combining Icon players, Superstar men and women, and a Prodigy. The preliminary stage follows a double round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the final.

Anand, Sindarov and India's Young Stars

Carlsen isn't the only major attraction.

Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand is competing for the PBG Alaskan Knights, alongside Indian star Arjun Erigaisi and 14-year-old Turkish prodigy Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş.

Meanwhile, Javokhir Sindarov leads the FYERS American Gambits. Sindarov is preparing for his upcoming World Championship match against India's D Gukesh, making his participation in Bengaluru particularly interesting for chess fans.

Interestingly, Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa are not participating in this year's Global Chess League as they focus on the upcoming Chess Olympiad.

$1 Million Prize Pool

There is also plenty at stake financially, with the fourth season carrying a $1 million prize pool.

The combination of elite players, franchise teams, rapid chess and a major prize fund is helping the Global Chess League establish itself as one of the most distinctive events on the international chess calendar.

Bengaluru Ready for World-Class Chess

The opening ceremony on September 4 brought together several of the tournament's biggest stars, including Carlsen, Anand, Arjun Erigaisi, Divya Deshmukh and Sindarov.

Now the talking is over and the chess begins.
