A pawn attacks the two squares diagonally in front of it. Push it so it hits two enemy pieces and one of them is lost — the pawn is worth so little that trading it isn't an option. Your e4 pawn can jump to e5, forking the knight on d6 and bishop on f6. The e5 square is covered by your knight, so it can't just be taken.
